Very occasionally the Polar Bear sent a short letter himself. On one occasion he revealed that his true name was Karhu; and he excused his bad English spelling from the fact that the language spoken at the North Pole was Arctic. As an example of the language he wrote the sentence M'ara mesta an ni vela tye ento, ya rato nea, and translated it 'Goodbye till I see you next, and I hope it will be soon. '
After his adventure in the caves, Karhu invented an alphabet from the Goblin marks on the walls, and sent a short letter in it; subsequently, after requests from the children, he sent them the alphabet. Here are both the alphabet and the letter.
